Eighty-seven percent of new car shopperss last month said they think gas prices will go much up from 66 percentin April. The prospect of higher gas prices also is havin g an impact onpurchasing decisions. When asked what they woulf be most likely to compromise in theirnext new-vehicle purchase, shopper cited engine size as the top item likely to be followed closely by vehicle size. In 73 percent of those who saw gas prices increasingh in May said they plan to changer their spending habits if gas prices were to gomuch "While we may not see the $5-per-gallonb gas experienced in some areasa last year, current economic conditiona compounded by the pain at the pump may make $3-per-gallo gas a new threshold for car buyer s – the point at which they change their mind abouyt what vehicle to buy and how they spendf their money," said Jack R.
